Authentic Frozen Charlotte Doll
Authentic pieces dating back to around 1800
Each piece is unique. Sold Individually.
While these might sound like a new menu item at Dairy Queen, they’re actually an interesting oddity from the past. A Frozen Charlotte is a type of small, solid porcelain doll that was popular in the United States and Europe during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. There have been many different takes on this, and countless styles exist, but they all share a common root and story.
The name "Frozen Charlotte" comes from an American folk ballad based on the poem "A Corpse Going to a Ball" by Seba Smith (1840). The poem tells the tragic story of a young girl named Charlotte who, against her mother’s warnings, refused to dress warmly for a sleigh ride to a ball—and froze to death on the way.
These assorted German Frozen Charlottes date to around 1860. They measure between 1 and 1.96 inches and were excavated near the old doll factories in Thüringia—specifically in Katzhütte, Limbach, and Sonneberg, Germany.
This is a neat little oddity that deserves a place in your collection simply for how fascinating it is.
